Food is the tie that binds.
If you think about it, food is present in just about every part of our lives. It makes it’s grand appearances in many different forms. I think that is why I love it so. That and it tastes good.
From the beginning of time, some 3 billion years ago, beings began eating. I would assume for sustenance. Possibly hunters would show superiority and inspire fear in others by killing but I believe food was mainly for nourishment. We continue today to treat food as nourishment. Some are more nourished than others. I’m pretty sure I ate 27 pizza rolls the other night. Probably not the best idea but I needed an appetizer for my beefaroni.
I believe that food plays an important role in society as well. Certainly the economics of food play a crucial role in our lives but the “spiritual” role is ever present as well. If you believe in God, you know that Jesus shared a meal with his disciples before his death. Another aspect of the spiritual side would be the fellowship one shares while eating with others. Meals shared with others cross all denominational and spiritual belief systems.
A Food of sorts, in particular salt, was once the most valuable resource on the planet. That which only nobles had the privilege of consuming. It was also used as currency and trade.
My belief in food is as follows:
Food is the tie that binds our body and souls together through sustenance and nutrition, love and happiness, communication and compassion.
Food is the glue that holds families together. Sharing a meal with your children and significant other creates a bond which is never broken. I also think that a significant amount of our challenges in the world today can be traced to parental responsibility which starts at the dinner table and has no end.
I have been on the fence about getting a tattoo since I was 18 years old. When I first thought of it, I wanted a Scrooge McDuck holding a money bag and a bottle of Whiskey. Those items were important to me then. Maybe too important. In hind sight, I am glad I resisted the temptation. Over the years, I have tossed and turned out different ideas but nothing really meant enough to permanently alter my body. Recently I have been thinking about it again and realized that food really is my life.
I cook for others. I cook to make people happy. I cook to provide sustenance. I cook because it makes me happy. I share meals with my family. Maybe not at your traditional dinner table always but we try to share meals in some form multiple times a week. I enjoy coming together with friends and eating. I provide meals to over 1000 Elgin residents twice a year because I want to. I feel i need to help them, I want to bring people together who’s paths may not otherwise cross. It makes me feel good. I do these things with a countless number of supporters through the use of food.
Food is Infinity… There is no beginning and there is no end. Food has Infinite possibilities. Every action of food has a reaction. Food gives us true power over our lives and sometimes over other’s lives as well.
